This is one of
the very best publications now available in transportation and logistics for
anyone planning on entering the logistics industry; current professionals in
the industry who wish to sharpen their skills on a broad base of key
elements of transportation and logistics; and others in logistics management who are
preparing for professional degrees or certifications in logistics and wish to
use this excellent text as a bridge to more comprehensive and advanced logistics
courses. I truly found this text very balanced between "solid
knowledge" and "real world application".

Logistics by the Book
By Amy Roach Partridge
Lying on the beach, you can get away with
reading pretty much any book. But as the hot summer sun starts to fade
and fall kicks in, it's time to toss something a bit more serious into
your laptop bag. Put down the John Grisham and pick up one of these
books to kickstart a new season of logistics learning.
A Practical Guide to Transportation and
Logistics, 3rd Edition
By Michael Stroh
What began as an internal training reference for front-line
shipping supervisors is now a reference textbook geared to both
students and logistics professionals. The third edition of A
Practical Guide to Transportation and Logistics has been
expanded to more effectively cover transportation and logistics
basics, including outsourcing, warehousing and inventory management,
technology evaluation, and negotiation strategies.
Key Takeaways: "Logistics Lore" capsules, which
offer real-world stories on relevant logistics issues, as well as
ready-to-implement cost-cutting tactics in a variety of areas.
Under ordinary circumstances, this is an invaluable textbook for those in
the field of transportation and logistics. When faced with managing
inventory in a dangerous world of disasters and terrorism, this is an
essential guide. This book is an indispensable tool for disaster and
terrorism mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. The expanded 3rd
edition includes explanations of the significant federal legislature and
programs enacted since September 11, 2001 to enhance the security of the
United States involving the food supply, container security, advanced cargo
information, secure trade, and a business-government customs-trade
partnership against terrorism.
It boosts homeland security by training
individuals to do their jobs well, and thus, prevent breaches of security
and catastrophes as cargo is either moved or stored. Drawing upon his years
of experience and using a friendly, easy-to-read style Michael Stroh
simplifies complex topics and helps the reader to confidently handle the
most difficult logistical challenges.
In the aftermath of a disaster, trying to
get the right supplies to the right place to help the right people can
become a disaster. Understanding the basics of logistics is crucial in
order to promote efficient disaster relief operations. Therefore, this is
also a necessary resource for those responsible for disaster relief
logistics.

Shipping
personnel or anyone with responsibilities related to shipping/transportation
would be will served to read this book.
As with previous editions of this book, the
newly released 3rd edition does not disappoint. I came across the first
edition years ago while searching for a “shipping 101” type book that could
be used as an educational tool to those new to shipping/transportation. This
excellent updated version quickly covers the topics of what you need to know
about shipping and receiving product, and does not waste time on some of the
more obscure theoretical topics related to logistics. It's very obvious that
the author, Michael B. Stroh has extensive hands-on experience in operating
a traffic department and does an excellent job of translating that
experience into this easy to read yet comprehensive guide. Of particular
value will be the tips on negotiating rates and discounts, auditing freight
bills, and export documentation.
